Aimee Geddes is an Accredited Voice Teacher through International Voice Teachers of Mix (IVTOM) and is also an IVTOM Mentor. Mentors are specially selected teachers from the best of IVTOM to train and help other teachers become accredited. Aimee is committed to helping those who wish to teach learn how to do so.
What does it take to become a Voice Teacher?
Becoming a Voice Teacher is more than just opening up your door and creating a webpage advertising your services. A true Voice Teacher works hard to expand his or her knowledge of Voice Science and Vocal Pedagogy. They are constantly studying teaching strategies and looking for ways to help every person that comes through their door become a better singer. Even if they don’t have all the answers, they look for them and continually seek to expand their knowledge so they may be of service to every singer who comes to them for help.
Teachers who want to earn their Accreditation through International Voice Teachers of Mix must accomplish three main tasks:
- Show that they understand what “mix singing” is and can demonstrate it proficiently in their own voice.
- Demonstrate that they can teach their students to mix and sing smoothly throughout the full range of the voice.
- Pass a written evaluation
How do I complete the above steps?
- Study with an IVTOM Mentor. Mentors will help you make sure you understand the concepts of singing in a Mix and that you know how to teach someone else to do so. Most teachers study with a Mentor 2-4 times per month in a private lesson setting.
- Once your Mentor feels confident in your abilities to sing and teach mix, they will refer you to a second Mentor to verify your teaching abilities. Generally the time with the second mentor is much shorter than time with the first mentor, only a few lessons are needed.
- Your mentor will also help you study for the written test, which is open book. The practice test can be found online at www.ivtom.org
How much do Mentor Lessons Cost?
Pricing for Mentor lessons is the same as regular lessons. The material we cover in that time will vary and cover a broader range than regular voice lessons. We may discuss in depth topics like: anatomy, physiology of the voice, formants, harmonics, registers, studio business strategies, IVTOM accreditation exam prep, and more.
At Breakthrough Studios, Mentor lessons cost:
Full Time $180/month Includes 4, half-hour private lessons ($45 per lesson)
Part Time $108/month Includes 2, half-hour private lessons ($54 per lesson)
3/4 Time $150/month Includes 2, 45 minute private lessons ($75 per lesson)
A La Carte $60 per half hour
Mentees are expected to make their lessons a priority and will only be recommended for accreditation as they show up for their lessons as scheduled and complete assignments in a timely fashion.
How long should I plan on taking Mentor Lessons?
Everyone is different. How many lessons you need to become Accredited depends on a few things:
- What you already know
- How much teaching experience you have
- How much time you spend working on assignments between lessons
- How focused and organized you are with your time
Those who have been teaching a while already can probably move through the process fairly quickly. Those who are brand new to teaching will probably need more time. Aimee works hard to make sure you can meet all of the requirements and earn your accreditation!
